BODYCAM: Albuquerque OIS of Suspected Car Thief
Officers feared one of their own had been run over by the suspect
By Calibre Press | Sep 15, 2016
Bodycam footage shows officers shooting at a white Chevy Tahoe. APD says they were looking for 20-year-old Rodrigo Garcia for several crimes, including ramming a police car the day before.
Police say Garcia did not have a gun, but they opened fire because they thought he ran one of them over. After a short tense standoff, SWAT officers moved in and dragged Garcia from the vehicle.
Garcia was shot seven times, including once in the head. APD says Garcia is now brain dead. They do not plan to charge him, but his attorney says his family may file a civil suit.
All 10 officers were placed on standard leave, but are now back on duty.
Note: The shooting took place in May of 2015 and video was released in April 2016.
