ANNOUNCEMENT: Equitable Sharing Payments Suspended
The surprise announcement leaves key details vague
By Calibre Press | Dec 23, 2015
Late yesterday afternoon, the DOJ announced on a phone call to law enforcement stakeholders that, effective immediately, all new equitable sharing payments to state and local law enforcement agencies through the federal asset forfeiture program will cease for the foreseeable future.
This decision is a result of the passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2016 (H.R. 2029), signed into law on December 18, 2015. The Consolidated Appropriations Act made major rescissions from the federal asset forfeiture fund to pay for other programs.
For a case study how this might affect local agencies, read this piece on the Midland County Texas Sheriff’s Department.
