Officer Involved Shooting in Dallas

September 21, 2015

An officer involved shooting occurred early this morning in Dallas, TX.  Two officers were fired upon shortly after being dispatched to an unrelated incident.  The following is a press release from Dallas Police Department.  We are glad to hear the officers were able to stop the threat and escape injury.

At 11:43 p.m., on September 20, 2015, two patrol officers responded to a major disturbance involving a motor vehicle accident in the Avondale Park Apartments.  This incident did not involve Mr. Ramirez, but he told his girlfriend that he did not want to live and wanted to shoot at the officers.

As officers were handling the original call on the other side of the complex, Mr. Ramirez stood in the parking lot and fired a handgun into the air several times which caused the officers to respond to his location.   Numerous residents called 911 to report Mr. Ramirez shooting his gun in the parking lot.

As the two officers approached, Mr. Ramirez moved from between parked vehicles and opened fire at the officers.  Officers returned fire and Mr. Ramirez ran southbound through the parking lot between the officers and moved between parked vehicles.

As officers approached, they spotted Mr. Ramirez and ordered him to drop his weapon.  Mr. Ramirez fired again at the officers.  The officers took cover and returned fire, striking Mr. Ramirez.

A semi-automatic handgun was found next to Mr. Ramirez.  Other officers arrived and one officer can be seen kicking the gun away from Mr. Ramirez.

Officers rendered aid to Mr. Ramirez until Dallas Fire and Rescue arrived.  He was transported to Texas Health Presbyterian hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  His next of kin has been notified.

A box of ammunition was also found in the parking lot and witnesses reported seeing Mr. Ramirez fire the weapon and reload it.

Family members and the suspect’s girlfriend reported that last night, Mr. Ramirez began acting strangely and had been using drugs.     Officers had been dispatched to Mr. Ramirez residence regarding his behavior on August 13 when he threatened to harm himself.  Video taken from a witness of the incident has been shown to the media.

More details continue to be released via the Dallas Police Department Twitter account.
